Project details
A Canadian fashion accessories brand wanted to develop a lightweight, waterproof silicone tote bag, primarily for everyday use or beach trips. During the initial development phase, sample bags provided by the client’s previous suppliers had several issues: air bubbles appeared in the uniformly 2.3 mm thick bag body, the right-angled handles were prone to breakage, and the drainage holes on the sides of the bag had sharp edges.
To address the aforementioned issues, the Z.S.R engineering team conducted a Design for Manufacturing (DFM) assessment and made targeted optimizations to the bag’s wall thickness, handle connection structure, and drainage holes: a partitioned wall thickness design was adopted, the bottom of the handles was rounded, and the drainage holes on the bag body also incorporated rounded and beveled corners.
Based on the DFM results, the project moved into mold making and sample production, followed by quality verification of the first batch before mass production.

Engineering DFM Assessment
Zoned Wall Thickness
To avoid increased internal air bubbles caused by overall bag thickness, Z.S.R’s engineering department recommended maintaining the main body wall thickness at 2.3 mm, while increasing the handle area to 3.2 mm.
The bag body maintains a wall thickness of 2.3 mm for a soft feel and easy bending and storage. The handle area, a key stress point, has a wall thickness increased to 3.2 mm to improve tear resistance.
While thicker silicone bags are prone to longer vulcanization times and increased internal air bubbles, zoned wall thickness improves production efficiency and reduces defect rates.
Rounded Handle Base
To address the issue of the handle’s base being prone to breakage due to its right-angle structure, Z.S.R engineers added a 3.0 mm radius rounded corner at the connection between the bag body and the handle.
During use, the handles of a tote bag continuously bear tensile force. Compared to a right-angle design where stress is concentrated, the rounded base of the handle disperses the tensile force, reducing the risk of breakage after repeated lifting.
Rounded Corners and Draft Angle for Drainage Holes
Considering customer experience and product durability, Z.S.R added a 0.5 mm radius rounded corner to all drainage holes on the bag body and increased the draft angle by 1°.
Compared to sharp edges that could scratch hands, rounded corners around drainage holes enhance safety during use and prevent tearing of the bag’s sidewalls during demolding, reducing material shortages and damage.
The increased draft angle facilitates the smooth removal of the mold core during production.
Mold Making, Sample Production & Quality Verification
Mold Processing
Z.S.R Group is equipped with 10 advanced CNC machining centers and 4 EDM machines, and processed the cavities of the silicone tote bag with integrated handles and multi-hole arrays.
Silicone Molding
Production is supported by 48 solid molding machines, 12 liquid molding machines, and 13 injection molding silicone machines, enabling one-piece solid silicone molding with the handles and bag body formed in a single step. Over 10 printing and spraying production lines also allow for printing logos or patterns on silicone products.
Secondary Vulcanization
After molding, the silicone tote bags undergo secondary vulcanization at 200°C for 2 hours.
The secondary curing process reduces odor in the finished product and improves long-term appearance stability before packaging and storage.
